Clashes rage on between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops in the disputed Karabakh region despite a unilateral truce announced by Baku.
Authorities in both countries are accusing each other of the continued fighting. Iranian officials say a village in the country’s Eastern Azerbaijan province has been hit by three mortar shells fired from Karabakh, causing material damage. Earlier on Sunday, Azerbaijan said it has unilaterally ceased hostilities and pledged to reinforce several strategic positions it claimed to have captured. Authorities in the autonomous Karabakh region say a ceasefire will be possible only if they regain their territory. Heavy fighting using tanks and artillery began in the region early Saturday. The international community has urged the two sides to immediately stop fighting. Karabakh lies inside Azerbaijan but is inhabited and controlled by Armenians. A war on the region killed some 30000 people between 1991 and 1994.
