General Joseph Votel, head of US Centcom, talked over cooperation with Kurdish and Arab militant groups while on a secretive trip to Syria on Friday. The talks were said to involve coordinating the US-led coalition and rebels plans on recapturing Raqqa from Islamic State. The news on the highly secretive visit to Syria broke only after Votel had returned to the US. In the aftermath of the visit, Brett McGurk, the US special envoy to the coalition against Islamic State (IS, ISIS/ISIL), tweeted that one of the purposes of the clandestine trip was to prepare an offensive on Raqqa, IS terrorists’ stronghold in Syria since 2013.
Commenting on the current positions of the US-backed forces in Syria, Vogel stated that he “left with increased confidence in their capabilities and our ability to support them,” in an interview, cited by AP. Iraqi Army Urges Residents to Leave Fallujah
The Iraqi army called on residents of Fallujah to leave the city before its imminent operations against the ISIL terrorists.
According to al-Mayadeen news channel, the army is trying to persuade the civilians to leave Fallujah to carry out its anti-ISIL operations and win back control over the city.
The Iraqi army announced that the Fallujah liberation operation is imminent, and called on the residents to stay away from the ISIL gathering centers and positions.
Iraqi volunteer forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) Spokesman Karim al-Nouri had disclosed on Friday that the massive military operation to win back Fallujah in Anbar province in Western Iraq is very near, adding that they have already laid siege on the city in Anbar province from different directions.
“The Hashd al-Shaabi forces have besieged the terrorists in Fallujah city from four directions,” al-Nouri told FNA.
He, meantime, reiterated that supporters of the ISIL terrorist group have been spreading the lie that the Iraqi volunteer forces have not taken part in the military operations to seize back Fallujah, “but the whole operation is under Hashd al-Shaabi’s command”.
On Tuesday, Seyed Hashem al-Moussavi, the spokesman of Hezbollah al-Nujaba, a major Iraqi Shiite resistance movement fighting the ISIL, voiced his forces’ readiness to seize back the city of Fallujah and defeat the ISIL terrorist group there.
“The terrorist groups who have turned Fallujah into Qandahar will see the outcome of their crimes in the battlefield,” al-Moussavi told reporters.
He said Fallujah in Iraq is similar to Raqqa in Syria, and reiterated, “We will surely enter Fallujah and this trend is irreversible.”
