Atrocities in Gaza: Israel’s Impunity Shows Inherent Unfairness in Global Justice System

On July 8, 2014, Israel invaded the Gaza Strip in broad violation of International Law, International Humanitarian Law, and international protocols.
During the illegal war, the Israeli army murdered more than 2,250 Palestinians. The United Nations says two-thirds of the victims were civilians — 1,462 people, including more than 550 children.
Now after two years, numerous human rights organisations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have joined forces in accusing the Israeli military of committing large-scale war crimes in the conflict. But what they seek is not fairness in the global justice system. They also accuse Hamas of committing war crimes, which is silly at best. Whatever it is, this is too late for Gaza.
But history tells us that Gaza won’t be the last place on earth to be invaded by an aggressive regime. It is going to happen again. And when it does, the aggressors will definitely ask for the Israel special treatment:
1-Despite the thorough documentation of Israel’s war crimes, no Israeli soldier or commander has ever been charged with criminal offenses. Against the backdrop of hundreds of serious violations documented by human rights groups, these charges are go nowhere near the heart of the problem.
2-During the 51-day aggression, the Israeli army bombed schools, medical facilities, water systems, sanitation networks, farms, businesses and the only power plant in Gaza. More than 18,000 homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair, leaving approximately 100,000 Palestinians homeless. After two years, most of those who lost their homes remain homeless. Israel’s nearly decade-long blockade restricts imports of construction materials. Moreover, international donors have failed to live up to their pledges to fund reconstruction efforts. This only means one thing: Global complicity in Israeli crimes.
3-With the help of powerful lobbies in Washington and the United Nations, Israel continues to evade International Law and accountability. This is because the investigatory system at the UN or in The Hague is not prompt, transparent or effective. It is selective and politicised, with fundamental conflict of interests in ostensible investigations into the war crimes that are committed by certain members. To add insult to injury, most of those who are key decision-makers overseeing such investigations are pro-Israel and pro-West – or perpetrators themselves!
4-All the past criminal investigations into Israeli atrocities have already been closed without any charges or proceedings. More so, when the UN does actually issue an anti-Israel resolution, the US government is quick to use its veto power to close the case without providing explanatory information.
5-The reports by international human rights groups and UN investigations into the Israeli war crimes always lack independence and impartiality. Effectively, they serve to shield perpetrators from prosecution and entrench impunity. They play the blame game by accusing both the Israeli military and Palestinian armed groups of committing war crimes and other violations of International Law. This way they don’t need to hold any Israeli to account, or conduct genuine, independent criminal investigations.
After two years, there still seems to have been little international outcry over the Israeli crimes that took place in view of cameras, where the whole world saw how children playing in schools or on the beach were massacred mercilessly, and how this passed like that – diplomatically and legally – without any criminals held to account.
This is a cruel world we live in. Expect no International Law or preliminary investigation by the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to take its due course, and certainly no Israeli military commander or official to be held to account for the large-scale war crimes and abuses they so openly and “proudly” committed during the unjustified war against Gaza.
