Trump Campaign’s Online Volunteers Required to Sign Away Their Soul
It appears that if you wish to be an online volunteer for the Donald Trump campaign, you’ll have to do a lot more than wear an ugly MAGA hat.
Online volunteers, who wish to help Don by making phone calls to potential voters, are required to sign this lengthy non-disclosure, non-compete, and non-disparagement agreement. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, this is a first, even for the Trump campaign.
Earlier this year, volunteers for Trump in New York had to sign non-disclosure agreements in person before making phone calls at Trump Tower. But the website requirement is the first indication that online volunteers must also sign the form, even if they’ll never meet a Trump family member, attend a Trump rally, meet a campaign staffer in person or step inside a Trump campaign office.
Trump is known for requiring those in his businesses and campaign to sign the agreements, up to and including senior advisers. He has sued associates over similar contracts, including his ex-wife Ivana in 1992. He settled with her a year later.
The “no disparagement” section of the agreement is certainly odd, especially for online volunteers who would only be making phone calls.
No Disparagement. During the term of your service and at all times thereafter you hereby promise and agree not to demean or disparage publicly the Company, Mr. Trump, any Trump Company, any Family Member, or any Family Member Company or any asset any of the foregoing own, or product or service any of the foregoing offer, in each case by or in any of the Restricted Means and Contexts and to prevent your employees from doing so.
For a “regular” campaign, this would be over-the-top. However, for the Trump campaign, it fits right in with their increasing paranoia. Most recently, Trump insisted an election loss to Hillary Clinton would only come about through cheating at the polls, despite actual polling less than two months before the election showing comfortable leads for Hillary all across the country.
