Tavis Smiley Says Trump Will Reinstate Slavery; I Say “Then Get a Gun”
Today on social media I read a post from a friend of a friend lamenting the idea of a President Trump. “It will be the end of democracy in this nation!” he posited hysterically. He isn’t the first person I’ve seen distressed about the idea that Trump might turn this country into a dictatorship. Tavis Smiley admitted he believed Trump would be the type of president to reinstate slavery and I’ve heard others say the same thing.
Just think about that for a minute. Think about how many different races live in this country in 2016, how many black people are in powerful positions, and how many protections the constitution gives us (including two other branches of government that share power). These people actually believe that one man would suddenly be able to wave his magic wand and somehow round up all black people in the country (are we taking Hispanics and Asians too? Anyone not white?). Then somehow that one man would be able to shift the entire US economy overnight to a slave-based economy. This is all assuming the military he would depend on to accomplish this would have no moral objections about enforcing slavery.
I understand the animosity toward Donald Trump, and while I don’t personally believe he’s a racist I do believe he’s an a**hole and I’m not shocked by people who feel he is indeed a bigot. However, its a giant, humongous leap from “racist” to “Slavery is legal again!”.
But let’s say that’s true. Let’s say that this man does take office and tries to do every horrible thing some people say he will.
Get on your knees and thank God for the Second Amendment.
Or are you white, anti-gun advocates just going stand by while the government marches into my home and seizes me and my entire family to live out the rest of our lives as slaves? Are you going to revolt or stand idly by?
If you’re saying to yourself right now, “I would never stand by and let my black neighbors and friends and family be forced into slavery. I would fight.” then please tell me how you do that without any weapons to defend me.
I’m not even saying you personally need a weapon but for heaven’s sake, why would we denying any law-abiding citizen the right to own a firearm if slavery is just around the corner?
The Second Amendment isn’t about having the right to hunt or be some redneck, yahoo who just loves shootin’ possum. The Founding Fathers had just fought a war against an oppressive government which had previously disarmed the citizens of the frustrated colony. They understood that if a government has the power to disarm its own citizens, the citizens have no means of protecting themselves if that government decides to violate the fundamental rights of said citizens.
To put it more plainly – if slaves had the right to own firearms what would American history look like today?
If you are one who thinks your minority neighbors are in grave danger at the hands of President Donald Trump, then for the love of all that’s holy – get a gun. Learn how to use it. Encourage others to do the same, and just for fun don’t vote for any legislation that keeps good, law-abiding citizens like yourself from protecting your neighbors of color when the Gestapo is finally unleashed on unsuspecting Americans.
Or maybe everyone is just being a tad over-dramatic.
