Actor Steps Over Social Clique in the Age of Trump.
Jennifer Garner, mom, actress, Save the Children activist and West Virginia native, gathered with a gaggle of Governors in Washington, DC last weekend to rally support for US Save the Children’s reading and literacy programs for poor rural kids.
“The West Virginia native has long worked to bring assistance to poor, rural communities in desperate need of it. She has no plans to change that just because most of those communities went big for Trump in last year’s election. In fact, she sees an opportunity to hold the president accountable for the pledges he made to the country’s rural working class.”
“I’m looking forward to helping him make good on what they saw as promises, a mandate from him, that he was going to make their lives better,” Garner said in a 45-minute interview with The Washington Post.
During the interview Mark Shriver, President of Save the Children Action Network joined Ms. Garner in proposing two solutions moving forward with the aid of a Trump Administration: all-day kindergarten and a revised tax package.
“Together, Garner and Shriver have urged Congress and state governments to fund reading and literacy programs that include all-day kindergarten. The organization has its own reading programs that it administers in schools and during in-home visits.
They found that children in rural areas are 60 percent more likely to be placed in special education programs when they start kindergarten.
… If a tax package is going to cut rates and red tape for corporations and Trump’s fellow billionaires, the thinking goes, the president had better find a way to expand credits and deductions for the education needs of the families that formed the bedrock of his support.
The actress urges the Governors and Congress not to settle on a selfie with a pretty celebrity.
“Everyone’s nodding and couldn’t agree more, and shaking your hand and want their picture,” she said. “But when the vote is cast, nobody’s out there screaming and yelling for poor kids.”
The time to act is now and if now means a spa retreat with an unlikely participant, then bring it on.
“Send me a ticket to Mar-a-Lago. I’m ready to go down and have a steak and a good chat,” she said, only half joking about the prospect. “I really think it’s great, if he’s willing to help the poor kids who got him elected.”
There’s a trend happening in Hollywood. The truly dedicated and motivated are stepping up, leaving the notoriety seekers languishing in their safe space. Ashton Kutcher, actor and philanthropist spoke with remarkable eloquence to a Senate Foreign Relations Committee a couple of weeks ago. He was not there for the money, but for the government to utilize the tools available to them to follow through on their stated goal to reduce the growing prevalence of sex trafficking.
Good job, Hollywood!
Today in History. On February 28, 1993, the federal government by order of the President, assisted by the Attorney General and executed by the ATF attempted a raid on the Branch Davidian compound, nine miles outside of Waco, Texas. Within a few hours, it was evident the ATF had botched the search and arrest operation, and the FBI took “control.” The day ended with four Federal agents and six Branch Davidians dead. The stand-off lasted fifty-one days and set to rest more than 80 lives. [ABC News Video Report]
Postscript. While the final hours of the Waco siege played out on April 19, a local student interviewed a 24 year-old US Iraq war veteran. The accidental reporter was intrigued by the man’s propagandizing his fellow gawkers selling them anti-government bumper stickers. Two years to the day, in Oklahoma City, Timothy McVeigh would sacrifice for his cause 168 lives, including nineteen children under the age of six.
