Jason Chaffetz: The President May Have Access To Info Lawmakers Haven’t Seen

(Before It's News)

So did Obama have Trump Tower’s phones tapped, or was it his Justice Department?

Did it happen, at all?

In the latest installment of the ongoing political saga, House Oversight Committee chairman, Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) says he has seen no evidence of President Trump’s weekend claims of having those phone lines tapped, but then again, maybe Trump has evidence at his disposal that no one else has seen.

Said Chaffetz:

“I’m going to keep my eyes wide open, you never know when you turn a corner what you may or may not see,” Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said on “CBS This Morning.” “But thus far I have not seen anything directly that would support what the president has said.”

Chaffetz joins with Intelligence Committee members, Senators Marco Rubio and Tom Cotton, who both say they’ve seen nothing to back up Trump’s story.

However, Cotton said the committee, which is undertaking an investigation into Russian meddling in the U.S. election, would look into the president’s claims.

The House Intelligence Committee, chaired by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), will also be investigating, and Chaffetz said Oversight “will play a supporting role” in that process.

So bundle the investigation into Russian tampering with Obama tampering.

That may be the wisest use of the committee’s time, and ultimately, in the best interest of the nation.

“The president has at his fingertips tens of billions of dollars in intelligence apparatus,” Chaffetz said. “I’ve got to believe — I think he might have something there, but if not, we’re going to find out.”

If it turns out that Trump has, as some believe, simply blurted out an accusation, based on what he may have read on social media (Breitbart, to be exact) or heard on Fox News, if a further investigation reveals nothing, it’s going to play hard against him in the media.

Of those who are incensed over his claims is FBI Director James Comey.

Comey reportedly went to the Justice Department over the weekend and asked them to dispute Trump’s claims.

Poor Comey can’t catch a break from either side.

He earned the scorn of Republicans when he initially chose to drop the case against Hillary Clinton, in regards to her email server.

Then he became a target of the Democrats, after reopening the case (due to information found on the laptop of Creeper Anthony Weiner), just before the election.

Now the Republicans are mad again because he went to the Justice Department over this matter.

Chaffetz said Monday that he reached out to Comey but has not heard back.

“I think it’s interesting the Department of Justice has not yet weighed in on this,” Chaffetz said. “I look forward to what they have to say.”

Some Republicans have defended Trump, saying that while Obama could not have ordered a wire tap directly, that it is possible his Justice Department sought a court order to monitor Trump’s phone calls as part of an investigation into whether Trump and his aides had inappropriate contact with Russian officials during the campaign.

That’s why we have investigations and committee hearings.

Hopefully we’ll have answers, soon.
