I have written about this topic several times in the past – I am inspired to write about it again since yet another well considered warning has been issued by seemingly knowledgeable and credible sources – EMP whether naturally triggered or maliciously triggered by enemies is conceivably the greatest risk to modern civilization, at least in the near term. It is certainly worthy of consideration again–especially in our rapidly deteriorating global relationship scenario.
Although this is not a new threat consideration, (EMP), this featured report highlights the latest of the calls for action against the threat of EMP. Electro-Magnetic Impulses are a real and acknowledged threat to electrical power generation and distribution as well as disruption of communications–should such a high magnitude event occur in our time the result would be devastating.
For the situationally aware, keeping track of possibilities is key.
EMP Attacks—What the U.S. Must Do Now
Abstract: Most Americans—whether members of the public or politicians in Congress—ignore or are unaware of the very real threat of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack. A nuclear device detonated high in the atmosphere above the American mainland can easily disable the country’s electrical grid—shutting down nearly all communications, transportation, and service systems. Overnight, daily life as Americans know it will be a thing of the past. There are ways to prevent devastation from an EMP — and the U.S. must invest in them now before it is too late. Two of the country’s preeminent national security experts explain how to prevent the worst.
An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack represents one of the greatest threats imaginable—to the United States and the world. An EMP occurs when a nuclear device is detonated high in the atmosphere—a phenomenon of which America’s enemies are well aware. The electromagnetic discharge can permanently disable the electrical systems that run nearly all civilian and military infrastructures. A massive EMP attack on the United States would produce almost unimaginable devastation. Communications would collapse, transportation would halt, and electrical power would simply be non-existent. Not even a global humanitarian effort would be enough to keep hundreds of millions of Americans from death by starvation, exposure, or lack of medicine. Nor would the catastrophe stop at U.S. borders. Most of Canada would be devastated, too, as its infrastructure is integrated with the U.S. power grid. Without the American economic engine, the world economy would quickly collapse. Much of the world’s intellectual brain power (half of it is in the United States) would be lost as well. Earth would most likely recede into the “new” Dark Ages. (Continued at link.)
The prospect of living without electricity and communications is a daunting prospect for millions of people who have adopted a full dependency on reliable electrical supply, we must remember however that life without electricity is a routine day for many millions more which drives home the point that survival in a power dead environment is entirely possible, but only if a person is mentally prepared to face such a prospect.
As we see far too often sudden and dramatic natural or man-made catastrophe can render huge populations inoperative–often because inhabitants are physically and mentally unprepared for such massive and sudden change. Often the populations themselves revert to being the major threat to an individual striving to overcome the challenges of societal collapse.
