Let us consider what that might mean IF the State of Israel is completely destroyed in, for example, a nuclear or thermonuclear attack. Can you imagine what would happen next? The talking-points would go something along these lines:

You might be right, Omega. But for the life of me, I fear you might not be. I think the Enemy gets up very, very early, and has positioned his pieces on the Grand Chessboard in ways and in places that none of us have yet been able to rightly discern.

Note that in the vision in Daniel 10:13-21 an angel identifies Michael as the protector of Israel. Here, Daniel refers to Michael as a “prince of the first rank”. Later in the vision in Daniel 12:1 Daniel is informed about the role of Michael during the “Time of the End” when there will be “distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations” and that:
“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise.” So we see that Michael is seen as playing an important role as the protector of Israel, and later of the Christian Church.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it would appear that the spirit residing over the protection of the Holy Land belongs to Michael. If so, then I simply can’t find a verse in Scripture that would lead me to believe that the destruction of Jerusalem is possible.

Possibilities
Scenario a: Jerusalem is wasted in nuclear fire. When Messiah returns, He will touch the Mount of Olives with His foot before it splits in two and a new valley is opened up between the halves of the mountain. One possible reason for this might have something to do with nuclear contamination which will be protected against by a hedge of fire
Scenario b: Mount Zion rises out of the plain because Jerusalem and the Holy Land have been devastated. Nuclear contamination might be dispersed at that time, or it might be such that only immortal beings can take up residence in and around the area for the following one thousand years.
Jerusalem could continue on, even in the face of utter devastation at the hands of a nuclear exchange.
Consider too the possibility that Jerusalem isn’t where we are told it is. We’ve been lied to about so much, there’s no reason to expect we haven’t been lied to about details like that.
This is why it’s never a good idea to become married to pet doctrines or beliefs (not that you have). We should be able to re-calibrate our mental model of all things nearly instantaneously in the face of paradigm-shattering revelations. I have maintained from the beginning of my studies that when we start getting the definitive answers to many of these questions, the real answers will bear no resemblance to what we have imagined, despite fulfilling prophecy to the letter.

I’ve always thought that this would be an interesting possibility until I read David Flynn’s work in which he was able to connect major events from history to their nautical distance from the foundation stone at Temple Mount. Have you ever looked in to his work? He has a book called Temple at the Center of Time which is what I generally refer to when I become confronted by this scenario.
For example:
In the year 1799, Napoleon declared Israel’s independence shortly after he found the Rosetta stone in Egypt which was used to establish the metric system. Napoleon, whose name can literally be translated as ‘the new Apollo’, understood his role in history and played his part proudly. I am familiar with David Flynn, in fact, he was the one member of the ‘group’ with Tom Horn and L.A. Marzulli, et al. that I thought was most genuine.
I actually think Jerusalem IS where we are told it is, but I’m prepared to be proven wrong about that at the least convenient time.
This is another reason I doubt even the names we can find through study. Perhaps Yahweh and Yehoshua are valid names, but it’s just as possible that we’ve been lied to about that as well. When I read Jeremiah 50 and 51 I get the impression that it is speaking about the eventual destruction of America (the daughter of Babylon). Thus, the destruction of America may be viewed as a harbinger which brings about the NWO. This may not be the correct interpretation, but lets pretend like it is.
So we can assume that the Messiah will warn His people before the destruction of America based on the fact that it’s a common theme throughout the Bible. In this case, it would appear that Jerusalem would be a land of refuge for those who heeded the warning. If Jerusalem were to be destroyed, where would those who escaped the destruction of America look to go? Would the strength of Jerusalem’s ability to withstand the enemy serve as a testament to Who’s in control and where His faithful should direct their travels?
I thought this was interesting because of what took place in the film World War Z with Brad Pitt. After the Zombie Apocalypse breaks out, Jerusalem was initially one of the few safe-havens on earth (the other main one was North Korea, but only because they cut off all travel to-and-from their island). They were prepared for it and built a huge wall so that these creatures couldn’t climb in. Eventually they do break into the city by climbing over the walls, but it was the initial idea of Jerusalem as a place of refuge that caught my attention.

I couldn’t agree more. And which city is THE Great City of Babylon? Could it be the city that is most insane upon its idols? Could it be the city that is actually NAMED after the whore herself?
But after the Jeremiah 50 destruction, we’re missing a Second Exodus and a repeat of Joshua leading the Israelites into the resisting armies of the Canaanites. That’s all (it would seem) going to be repeated. So just as the first Joshua led the Hebrews out of the wilderness, across the Jordan and into the Holy Land, we can expect to see those patterns again. There is going to be some serious arse-kicking on the menu when Messiah returns, and His invading Armies are going to have plenty to do just like Joshua’s armies did.
In whatever form Jerusalem exists at that time, it is going to be important one way or another. Just like Jerusalem got smashed in the past, there should be no reason to expect that won’t happen again, and on an even grander scale.
NOTE: Satan is going to make it look FOR ALL THE WORLD as if he as won. And he is going to fool just about everyone into believing it. Those of us who remain alive in those days are going to have to walk by faith more so than at any other period in the history of man. (3) Hosea 1: 10, “Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea which cannot be measured nor numbered:”
