Sitting in a bar in Florida with my best friend, a guy walked up and started some polite conversation. When my friend asked him what he did for a living he answered, “I’m a dolphin waxer.”
And I “KNEW.”
(She and I were two females alone, in a strange town, with no male in the building to watch out for us. It was noon day and maybe ten people in the bar. Everyone appeared to know one another, except us.)
I looked my friend dead in the eyes and said, “Don’t tell him anything. He works for the CIA.”
He laughed heartily, stood and walked out of the room down a long hall. While he was out of sight, I dropped money on the bar, threw up a hand at the barkeep, yelled a thank you and we made a dash for the car.
I was aiming my key for the keyhole when I was spun around and pinned against my car. He was nose to nose with me. “How do you know me? he asked in a violent whisper?
I stared back, eyes locked-cold and hard- with no facial expression. I knew he wouldn’t believe me. Connie was behind me crying and begging me to tell her what was going on and for him to just let us go.
He asked again, Harder. I remained the same.
He told Connie to shut up. She did.
He was behaving this was in an open parking lot, in broad daylight, in the middle of the day, in the middle of one of Floridas largest cities. He was unaffected by his surroundings.
It was my statement that bothered him.
We stood that way for what seemed like forever, but was only maybe 45 seconds. He quickly realized I was just not going to react or answer him. And he wasn’t going to hurt me. I “knew’ that too.
He told Connie to get in the car, and roll up the windows. She did. (it was July.)

I said,”You don’t understand, I can’t do it on purpose.”
He answered,” You can be trained too.”
I got in my car and left.
