Assisi was born c1181 CE. The Borgia Popes that destroyed the purity of elected leadership in Catholicism with political assassinations and intrigue, came 300 years later. Basically the Borgia’s took over Catholicism by creating a hereditary line of Popes. Which is why they banned priests from marrying. Never mind being a King of a country, if you controlled Catholicism you were Emperor of the world.
Fortunately these days that can’t happen again, because we all live under secular law with a separation of church and state. The Borgia’s are the reason for it, as a preventative measure.
