We all know the desperation felt when we discover a leaking pipe or when the boiler refuses to work in December and reach for the number of a plumber. Plumbing is a profession that we can trace back to Roman times. Over time there have been several names of note that have gone on to find fame and fortune in another field. Check out these five people who started out as plumbers.
Tom Finney was employed as a plumber whilst he worked his way up the ranks of English professional football. He played for a team in the English football league called Preston North End, for whom he played for 14 years up until 1960. In 1954 and 1957 he won the title of Footballer of the Year. He continued to work as a plumber as his wages from football was just £12 per week.
The Mario Brothers, who achieved fame as video game characters, also began as plumbers in New York. Throughout the decades, the characters have been modified and transformed over and over again. Still included in many popular video games, the two plumbers also starred in a film together several years back.
Academy Award nominee Bob Hoskins was previously a plumber before achieving movie star status. Ironically, Hoskins was Mario in the Mario Brothers Movie, in which he played the famous plumber.
Michael Caine is perhaps the most famous person on this list. He was working as a plumber until he was offered the job of a stage manager in a theater. He soon took to acting in plays before being discovered as the movie star we know him as today.
Thomas Crapper is a household name when it comes to toilets, although he did not actually invent the toilet. The salesman supplied toilets to the camps of soldiers in the first World War. A Crapper became the slang term used by the soldiers and it is still used today. These five men were famous in the field of plumbing in different ways but all share one thing in common – they all started their working life as a plumber.
