(Before It's News)

More and more outraged citizens are showing up at City Commission meetings to express their outrage to an indifferent majority on the commission and a chronically arrogant Mayor; Craig Lowe.

Citizens and voters are finally waking up the unethical and fiscally irresponsible practices at the City of Gainesville and Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) with secret negotiations that will place a $3 to $4 Billion biomass Incinerator debt on the backs of GRU ratepayers held hostage by rate increases whenever foreign investors demand more profit.

While speaking at citizen comment may be a powerful way to reveal issues to the public through the City's TV cameras, it's even more effective when followed-up with records requests under the State of Florida's Public Records Act.

Suggestion on how to make City and GRU  records requests under the FLORIDA PUBLIC RECORDS ACT.
NOTE:  Check that names provided here have not changed over time when different employees fill these positions.

1. Email your public records request titled "FLORIDA PUBLIC RECORDS ACT Request" to the person most responsible for creating the record.

2. For the City, send the request to Shaneka Young at the City Clerk's office: ([email protected]) with a copy to Kurt Lannon ([email protected]).

3. For the Mayor's office send the request to Devonia Andrew ([email protected]) with a copy to Kurt Lannon ([email protected]).

4. For GRU send the request to the person most responsible for the record (if possible) with copies to Rita Strother ([email protected]) and a third copy to GRU attorney, Shayla McNeill ([email protected])

5. Ask to "inspect" specific records rather than to have them "provided".

6. Indicate that you expect a response within 2-3 working days.

7. Make your request as specific as possible to prevent a deluge of unrelated documents for which you may be charged a fee.
