After rumors and speculation went awry, Nintendo has finally come out of its shell to announce its latest creation called the Nintendo Network, a branded online service for the 3DS handheld and the upcoming Wii U console that is already in place.
Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata revealed the details on the new online platform during the company’s Q3 earnings report yesterday. He said the Nintendo Network was built to allow for ”competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content” (DLC and fully downloadable games). He also mentioned that the service will introduce personal user accounts on the Wii U platform.
Iwata added that the Nintendo Network has already been developed. “This concept was built into the design of the Nintendo 3DS, and we already have the necessary infrastructure,” Iwata said, “We will prepare the same infrastructure for the Wii U. However, we have not decided the concrete timing of when we will start it.”
