News has poured in that India’s mobile subscriber base has reached a figure of 919.17 million in the month of March. This makes the total number of sign-ups somewhere around 8 million for that month. TRAI has confirmed that the wireless user base grew by 0.88% from 911.17 million in February to the current figure. These figures are just about the mobile user base. The total tele-density of India has reached 78.66%. This means that the total number of telephone subscribers (including landlines) is now 951.34 million, which represents a growth of 0.83%. The total number of active mobile subscribers is pegged to be somewhere around 683.02 million out of the total of 919.17 million. This is because only these many were active on the day of peak Visitor Location Register (VLR). This is a temporary database of subscribers who are in a particular area that is served by the network. Every base station has one VLR, so a subscriber cannot be present in any other circles at one point in time. This method threw up the earlier number of actual/active subscribers.
Here’s the number of subscribers that mobile carriers have gotten in the month of March:
Bharti Airtel (Total: 181.3 million) – 2.5 million.
Idea Cellular (Total: 112.72 million) – 2 million.
Uninor (Total: 42.4 million) – 1.3 million.
Reliance Communications (Total: 153 million) – 1 million.
Vodafone (Total: 150.5 million) – 1 million.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) (Total: 98.5 million) – 7,61,794
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) (Total: 5.8 million) – 58,681
Additionally, the broadband subscriber base grew by 1.86% from a figure of 13.54 million in February to 13.79 million in March. The wireline segment saw a marginal decrease in numbers from 32.33 million in February to 32.17 million in March.
Overall, this some good growth for the telecommunications industry with Airtel clearly leading all the other carriers. Uninor is also doing quite well even though there have been problems as a result of the 2G scam. With the projected increase in the usage of mobile Internet throughout India, the number of subscribers could jump higher.
