Upping its competition with the US technology giant Apple, South Korean manufacturer Samsung has unveiled a new phone in its Galaxy range.
The new Galaxy SIII model is Android based and flaunts the latest OS from Google, GOOG.O. Its eight megapixel camera and 4.8-inch touch screen may not make it “eye-catching”, as an IDC analyst put it. Nonetheless with its release the company expects to give a tough competition to Apple most advanced iPhone (AAPL.O).
This model of Galaxy SIII has a more powerful processor and larger touch screen.
Samsung, which dethroned Nokia at the beginning of this year as the world’s largest maker of cellphones, plans to release this latest smartphone in their inventory during late May in selected markets. Beginning from June the phone will slowly become available in other countries too.
Galaxy range of phones already outsells Apple’s iPhones. And these strong sales helped Samsung pocket in record $5.2 billion in profits during the first quarter of 2012.
Many analysts believe keeping the upcoming London Olympics in view, there is going to be an intense marketing campaign as the company tries to sell its device as the official smartphone for the Olympics. Samsung is hoping to cash in on the Olympics euphoria, but many analysts remain sceptical.
The biggest complain among critics is the phone’s design. Samsung defends the design by saying it was inspired from the blue lights in the Olympics launch venue in London. The company thinks it echoes a rainy day outside the venue. However, if the consumers pay to get the same feeling remains to be seen.
