Microsoft’s Xbox 720 “surprise” has potentially been partially spoiled after a 56-page document detailing some of the next-gen console’s hardware was posted on Scribd mere hours before Microsoft is supposed to unveil some newfangled technology (current rumors point to a self-branded tablet to compete with the iPad). While the details and specs leaked in said document are no doubt slightly modified, it does paint a good picture into what the potential power for the next-gen Xbox will very likely be as well as gives us a small glimpse into just how far back Microsoft’s begins preparing for the “next big thing”.
As for the specs, the CPU was a work in progress. Microsoft was looking at a 6-8 core ARM/x86 slab of silicon, with each core clocked at ~2GHz each. Tag-teaming duties were to be provided by 4 GB of DDR4 as well as an additional tri-core PPC CPU for backwards compatibility with older Xbox 360 games. Movie buffs will be pleased to know that after initially scoffing at Sony’s licensing fees for Blu-ray, an agreement of some sort regarding price was likely reached as it too is present in Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox plans. Other notable talking points include a Kinect 2 and $299 price point. The leaked documents point to a 2013 release.
The document in question that was posted on Scribd earlier has already been taken down by Microsoft’s law firm, Convington & Burling LLP.
The above specs, pricing and release window sound enticing, and the last two points at least fall into line with numerous other rumors (and statements by Microsoft themselves). If Microsoft has their way, you will use your Xbox 720 (or whatever they decide to officially name it) as your one and only destination for living room entertainment.
