News has been circulating about Facebook testing video chatting options on the new Timeline. It seems Facebook is finally waking up to the serious threat posed to it by social networks that include video chatting. Facebook has always been about text and photos. With Google+’s Hangouts, the definition of a social network got extended when a standalone feature like video chat got integrated into it.

With Airtime debuting 2 weeks back, Facebook might have finally felt that it is losing out on this particular piece of the human social experience. Skype, in their marketing campaign had heavily criticized modern social networks on degrading the human social communication experience. This argument is sound on some levels as updates, posts and photos are but poor replacements for an actual conversation. Airtime has had a lot of buzz since it launched. It allows you to chat with your Facebook friends and also allows you to connect anonymously with a ‘somewhat’ random person based on the things that you both like, your age, location and a myriad of other parameters. Google+ hangouts is an awesome feature where you can video chat with many people publicly or privately even from your mobile phone (ICS). With the new Hangouts on Air feature, users can now broadcast their hangout videos live to the world. I am personally very stoked at the implications that this has for Indie media and content broadcasters all over the world.
Facebook had gotten together with Skype to bring about a video chatting service at least a year ago. Right now, it is planning to integrate the feature in such a way that if two desktop users are online, the call button will appear on their profile.
Here is the image that we saw floating around the web.
The Skype integration had promised many new features but they haven’t seen the light of the day yet. Microsoft has revealed that Skype is going to play a big part in Windows 8. If Skype is integrated properly into Facebook, then it could be a seamless video chatting experience which would be available for every platform.
Would you welcome video chat in to your Facebook experience? How do you think it will improve your social experience? Share your opinions with us.
