Just as most of the laptop manufacturers are bring out very thin and slim ultrabooks, Panasonic have gone completely in other direction with its new Toughbook CF-19. Being a Toughbook we already that it is going to be big, bulky and built like a tank, it may be all of that, but at the same time, it offers the user some of the latest features available such as the Ivy Bridge Intel processors and touch screen technology allowing it to be used a tablet when required. Yet this is a machine built to work in harsh conditions and as such meets the US MIL-STD 810G standards for protection from water, dust, vibration and temperature, as well as being dropped from six feet, now that is tough.
The new Toughbook CF-19 has a 10.1 inch XGA sunlight-viewable LED TransflectivePlus and Panasonic CircuLumin display with a choice of either touchscreen or dual touch technology with a 1024 x 768 of a pixel resolutions and there is of course the built in 3 mega pixel web camera with auto focus and dual LED light. It will be powered by the latest Ivy Bridge versions of the Intel Core i5-2520M vPro Processor at 2.5 GHz but with Turbo Boost it’s up to 3.2 GHz supporting the Intel Smart Cache 3 MB and with video coming from the Intel HD 4000 graphics card.
There is 4 GB of SDRAM (DDR3 1333 MHz) as standard, but is expandable to 8 GB and there is a reasonable sized 320 GB 7200 rpm hard disk drive (HDD) that is shock-mounted flex-connect with quick-release. As normal communications are provided through the Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 802.11 a/b/g/n wi-fi, the Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR (Class 1) and then there is the 10/100/1000 Ethernet to fall back on if all else fails, providing there is a connected router handy.
Other features will include the USB 3.0 port, optional HSPA+ module, a serial port and PC Card slot. Finally it measures up as just 8.5 inches (D) x 10.7 inches (W) x 1.9 inches (H) and weighs in at a hefty 5.1 pounds with the Lithium ion battery pack (11.1V, typical 5600 mAh, minimum 5300mAh) in place, Panasonic say that there is up to nine hours (touchscreen) or eight and half hours (dual touch) of power available.
Panasonic are hoping to get this tough laptop out into the stores by July, when it will have a starting price of around $3,700.
