Review: MediaDevil MagicScreen Screen Protectors
As you all know, we love ourselves some iPhone cases. And, if you know me at all, you know I have a love/hate relationship with them. I love them for the protection, but I hate the crap out of them because I do not like to give up the pure sexiness that is the design of an iPhone. Apple has always blown me away with their hardware. When I hold it in my hand, I love to stare aimlessly into the depths of the device, all while hoping I don’t drop it and ruin what I hold.
My favorite product since my first iPhone graced my hand was the screen protector. It gave the screen some nice protection while not taking way from the outstanding design. Protecting while not sacrificing beauty was something I really looked for. But when the iPhone first came out, especially around the 3G days, the application proces wasn’t the easiest. Wet application was how it all started and that by far wasn’t the simplest task on the block.
But as the years and iPhones progressed, so did the simple protection. If you’ve read my previous reviews, you know I am fond of BodyGuardz. I have always had outstanding luck with the brand, and the application process is very simple and it always works – especially for a wet application. But one random day I was sent a pair of MediaDevil MagicScreen protectors and though I would give em a try.
The Matte and Crystal Clear Editions were sitting on my desk, waiting to be used. I didn’t really want to give up my brand new CES2012 applied BodyGuardz film, but I knew I had to review and see what I though. So after a couple of months, it was time for me to retire my BodyGuardz and see what I though of the MediaDevil brand.
I applied the Matte film to both my wife’s phone as well as my own. After about 3 weeks of use, I plopped on the Crystal Clear Edition on both.
First off, the application process is one of the easiest I have ever encountered. It is a dry process, so there aren’t any sprays or fuss. It is a simple – peel off and apply process – that anyone with a steady hand can master.
Now, the matte finish film was very nice. In all honestly, I liked it. However, I didn’t like what it did to the Retina display on both the iPhone 4 and the 4S. I felt it really took away from the perfection that Apple applied to it’s smartphone. The amount of pixels could still be seen, but they were dulled down, in a sense. Wasn’t the worst that could happen, but it also didn’t help the iPhone stand out. And the worst part about it, you could tell there was something over the screen.
I love not knowing my iPhone is protected. I like the fact that I can see every knook and cranny Apple intended me to see. I love every single pixel that my eyes gaze upon, day after day.
My wife felt the same way. She loved the protection, but didn’t really like the way it looked.
So that is when we decided it was time for the Crystal Clear Edition. Again, the application process was simple and incredibly quick. A few seconds had passed and both of our phones were wearing a protective film.
Let me begin by saying, the Crystal Clear Edition film will not only protect your iPhone, it’ll really blast that Retina display out for all to see. I felt the screen jumping out more than ever. I forgot the film was on 9 out of 10 times. It is a gorgeous view, and a heft protection at the same time.
The MagicScreen offers an incredibly easy application process, it’s thin and extremely strong. No markings or scratches will be left on the film if nicked or scratched. The Crystal Clear film is virtually invisible.
I have used BodyGuardz for over 4 years now, and the brand has been given a run for it’s money. The MagicScreen from MediaDevil makes me break all ties with the BodyGuardz brand. I really hate to say it, but my time spent with the Crystal Clear Edition is the most exiting time I have spent with a protective film. There isn’t a negative thing I can say about it.
The matte version had its flaws. I have purchased and used some matte finished films in the past, and never been happy. That didn’t change with this brand. Both my wife and felt it did more [visual] damage than it did help. The clear edition, however, was the most incredible viewing I have had, minus no film at all.
Each order will ship with two screen protectors. As I have mentioned, application is incredibly easy and there is no fuss. For a price tag of around $10.00 you can pick yourself up some of the best screen protectors you will ever use. Other brands like ZAGG and BodyGuardz average around $20.00. Most of the time they ship with two applications. But you can spend half the price and get a far superior product that does not take away from the Retina display in one bit.
The Matte was a bit disappointing, but I will base this review on the complete satisfaction that was had by the Clear Edition. Head on over to MediaDevil’s webpage and pick yourself up a pair of Magicscreen protectors!
