In its first few days of availability, Apple’s latest Mac OS X (10.8) Mountain Lion has been downloaded more than two million times and now powers more than 3% of all Macs worldwide, online tracking firm Chitika announced on Friday.
The Massachusetts-based analytics firm reported that the software upgrade, which carries a price tag of approximately $20, had been downloaded an estimated 2.11 million times during the first two days since its release, which means that it could be “be the fastest released and adopted operating system of all times,” explained Cory Gunther of SlashGear in a July 27 article.
Furthermore, Computerworld‘s Gregg Keizer reported that Mountain Lion accounted for 3.2% of all versions of the Cupertino, California-based tech giant’s operating system — a feat which Chitika representatives called “rather impressive in an email statement. The top spot was held by OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), which had 45.5% of the Mac OS market share, followed by OS X 10.7 (Lion) with 35%.
“Other Web measurement firms have not corroborated Chitika’s data,” Keizer said. “Nor has Apple revealed any information about how many copies of Mountain Lion have been downloaded since the upgrade hit the Mac App Store early Wednesday.”
The software upgrade has held on to the top spot on the e-market’s bestselling paid app list since its release, he said. Provided Chitika’s figures were accurate and at least 90% of the users paid the modest $19.99 upgrade fee, then, as VentureBeat writer Sean Ludwig pointed out, Mountain Lion had “generated $38 million in revenue” as of Friday evening.
“Based on these impressive numbers, we wonder if Apple wishes it started offering cheaper and easy-to-download upgrades several OSes ago,” Ludwig added. “Microsoft no doubt took notice of Apple’s successful Lion upgrade option last time, one of the reasons Windows 8 will cost just $40 to upgrade.”
In a report discussing their findings, Chitika said that Mountain Lion’s popularity may have been bolstered by customers who did not upgrade to Lion due to “mixed reviews,” as well as the low price point and the “expansive list” of more than 200 new features included in the OS upgrade, including a notifications center and easier sharing of images and documents.
