First American Woman in Space Dies

It has been announced that the first American woman in space, Dr. Sally Ride has passed away at the age of 61. Her first flight in space was aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1983 and repeated it with the same shuttle in 1984.

As the President and CEO of Sally Ride Science, her company specialized in creating science education programs and products for students as well as teachers at the elementary and middle school level with the aim of promoting science education in girls.

She graduated with a B.S in Physics, B.A in English, and M.S. and PhD in Physics from Stanford University. She was also Professor of Physics (Emerita) at the University of California, San Diego.

She was described as a person who lived her life to the fullest. She was reported to have passed on peacefully on the 23rd of July. She had been diagnosed of pancreatic cancer some 17 months back.
