For $200, Google and Asus’ Nexus 7 tablet is hands down, the tablet to have if Android is your OS of choice. In the U.S., the upcoming music, magazines and TV shows debuting on the Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean will, together with the Nexus 7′s hardware, make the device the best end-to-end experience Google has provided to customers yet. But there’s a catch. And it’s a big one. The all-important music/magazines/TV show trifecta hitting the American streets won’t be a global offering (at least not initially at launch).
According to The Inquirer, a Google spokesperson confirmed that the UK Nexus 7 will ship sans new and exciting features/content.
“The UK version will feature all of the options currently available in the UK Play store”
(Read: the music/magazines/TV shows content won’t be available at launch.)
The reasoning behind the delay in functionality/content is the same as it always is with these sorts of things — licensing. While we’d like to hope Google is working extra diligently behind the scenes to bring the new content mediums to the UK (and more) Nexus 7 markets, the reality of the situation is such things can often take many months.
Depressing for UK readers, yes. But honestly, even without all of the new content, there’s still plenty to love about a quad-core, Jelly Bean packin’, $200 tablet. Just sayin’…
On the flip side, UK residents holding out for a smaller ~7″ tablet and a full suite of content may be bummed to learn the Nexus 7′s launch will very likely come and go without any such content. On top of that, the rumored “mini iPad” scheduled to debut this fall will almost certainly have the same access to Apple’s international juggernaut of a content ecosystem, iTunes (apps, music, tv, videos, podcasts).
