(Before It's News)

When it comes to my iPhone 4S, I don’t like it raw. That is to say that I prefer the protection of a finely crafted case, in the event I prove to myself what it means to be clumsy. There are countless options available to smartphone owners when it comes to cases – especially to those iPhone 4 / 4S owners out there with the glass on both sides of their device. Because we get to review cases pretty frequently, we can be a little finicky with what we like and what we don’t.

I had the opportunity to test the Ballistic SG (for Shell Gel) case on my 4S for a while now. I tend to flip between thinner, low-profile cases and occasionally strap on the magnum of cases in the heavy duty series if I’m feeling abnormally unlucky. What I love about the Ballistic SG case is it meets nicely in the middle – it’s a lower profile case that packs the protection of the thicker cases on the market.

As you can see, the case itself isn’t as bulky and, because of that, it packs the easy pocketability that many iPhone owners come to love.  Further, it has the extra cushioning on the corners just in case you accidentally drop it and it takes a tumble.  The SG case comes with three layers of protection:

  1. Ballistic shock absorbent layer
  2. Tough impact resistant polycarbonate shell
  3. Soft silicone equipped with Ballistic Corners(TM)

I took the liberty of tossing my phone around the house a few times and, while each time I felt a little queasy, I was pleased to see the SG case held its own and protected my phone just fine.  One added bonus is that, at night, I lay my phone face down on my night stand.  The slight height on the borders of the case allow it to have the lay-on-table feature without the fear of the front screen being scratched.

The SG case is compatible with AT&T, Verizon and Sprint iPhones.

In a world where cases can easily reach $80+, you may find yourself questioning whether you need some of the extra protection that is offered and whether it’s worth the extra coinage.  If that is something you ponder over, I’d recommend giving the Ballistic SG case a look!

Thank you to Max Borges and Ballistic for the review unit!
