A study that was connected to check the penetration and market share of the players in the tablet industry has come out with the most predictable results that can be thought of. The data showed that Apple commands 85% of the market. To give a graphic picture of this, eighty-five out of every hundred tablets sold is an Apple product. If there is any hope for the competition, it could be that it is the fact that Google’s Nexus 7 and the soon to arrive Surface from Microsoft were not factored in the computation. And this is hoping that they would be able to put up enough competition that is more than what they have been facing from the likes of Samsung and Blackberry.
Statcounter was used by Pingdom to analyze the devices used by people to access the web with particular reference to those using tablets. And it was not the kind of news Android and RIM would want to hear. Android based tabs were said to have 13% of the market while RIM’s Blackberry PlayBook and WebOS were joined with “others” and given 1.3% of the market. The regions were covered as South America, Africa, Asia, North America, Europe and Oceania.
Apple’s iPad held 92.8% of the market of Oceania which was the region where it had the largest share. The region where it had the lowest share was in South America with 77.4%. In the critical markets of Europe, North America and Asia it held 88.3%, 87.5%, and 78.1% respectively. Android held 21%, 21.2% and 21.4% in Asia, Africa and South America respectively
The figures shows where it even looks as if there is some sort of competition for Apple is in Asia but they sold seventeen million units in the second quarter of 2012 and no one touched that in any market. Asia that seems to be the home base of Google’s Android market is still getting some hiding from Apple. Samsung, apples most visible rival to date that is based in South Korea still had to tow after Apple’s iPad in their country. Androids only manage to hold down about 18% of the market while iPad has over 80%. The closest Asian nation where they seem to actually have stiff competition is in Indonesia. Apple’s iPad has 55.6% and Android has 44%.
But Android is actually growing and is said to have done so by 2.1% from November while Apple shrank from that same period from 2.2%.
