Pepperfry.com, a lifestyle e-commerce venture that was launched in January, 2012 is looking to hit the 100crore gross merchandise value by December, 2012.
When launched, the online store had 25,000 SKUs across segments like furniture, accessories, perfumes, cosmetics, home décor, etc. Within 8 months the company has scaled up to 28,000 SKUs with a unique offering of 45,000 products. It offers a mix of mass brands and premium ones and segments like pet care and musical instruments are soon to be launched. The store has ‘lifestyle’ as its focus and aims to touch every aspect of the consumer’s life. Currently, Pepperfry ships 2,000 items per day and has reportedly crossed Rs 4crore worth of business this month. The online shopping newbie (well on its way to becoming a giant) has a registered user base of 250,000 with 60% of its customers being women. Pepperfry is a new addition to a long list of e-commerce sites that are vying for the customer’s attention and money.
Online furniture retailer Urban Ladder recently got a $1 million funding from Indo-US Venture Partners whereas biggie Reliance Brands is planning to enter the e-commerce market. Innovation is top priority among e-commerce players as they try to attract maximum customer and retain them. The thing to note here is that Pepperfry faces competition not just from general lifestyle e-stores like Fashionara and Yebhi but from specialists ones like Juvalia & You (jewellery only) too.
The one thing that Pepperfry may want to focus on, apart from acquiring more customers and adding to its product list, is their user interface. The current one appears too cluttered and it is difficult to navigate on the site – a case of too much that hits the eye and ends up overwhelming the individual.
The fact that Pepperfry raised $5 million last December from Norwest Venture Partners has certainly helped it gain a stable foothold in the market. The company that employs 140 people and delivers across 700 cities has 3 logistics hubs and aims to add 3 more to the list soon. They have no immediate plans of seeking more funding.

IT IS A BIG FRAUD COMPANY, EVEN BIGGER CHEATER THAN SAHARA, KINGFISHER etc. I HAD ORDERED SOME ITEMS. THEY HAVE NOT DELIVERED ANY OF THE ITEM EVEN 10 DAYS AFTER THE ORDER. ONE OF THE ITEM WAS SENT TO EAST INDIA, THOUGH I HAD ASKED FOR IT IN CHENNAI. SOME OTHER ITEMS WERE SENT VIA DIFFERENT COURIER COMPANIES WHICH MOST PEOPLE HAVE NEVER HEARD OF. THE AIRWAY BILL NUMBERS ARE MOSTLY FORGED. THE COURIER COMPANIES DO NOT HAVE TRACKING FACILITY. THE CUSTOMER CARE EXECUTIVES HARDLY RECEIVE YOUR CALL. THE CHAT NEVER WORKS.
A definite FLY BY NIGHT OPERATOR. ANOTHER E-COMMERCE SCAM IN THE MAKING.
