Twitter’s official apps have fallen out of popularity with their most loyal users in recent months due to a lack of attention, namely updates. Features are being removed left and right and design choices are at times worth scratching your head over. That said, today the company pushed out big, new updates for both iOS and Android.
First, iOS. For iPhone and iPad, Twitter for iPhone/iPad now sits at version 5.0. The most obvious changes for both clients are new profile pages which feature large, vivid header images as well as collapsable tweets that can be expanded to view attached content with a single tap. Other features shared between the two clients include Photostreams on profiles and events as well as the usual polish and performance enhancements. Meanwhile, the iPad version of the app which has gone eons without an update finally has the more recently refined and updated Twitter UI that the iPhone app has had for many months now.
On the other side of the fence, Android users got their own update to glean over, tipping the scales at version 3.4. Much the same as the iPhone/iPad update, photo stream viewing is now implemented within the timeline with easy swiping between images. The “prettier” profiles complete with header images are also present here, too.
Out of all the positives, there is one thing in particular sure to irk some harder core users making use of 3rd party photo upload services in the official app – they’re gone. Yup. Twitter has (unsurprisingly) removed all 3rd party photo upload services and left pic.twitter as the sole option. For most users it’s no big deal as it is, in fact, the default service that is used. For users who don’t like awful photo compression, though, it’s but another reason to stop using Twitter’s official apps.
