(Before It's News)

Mention the words “DRM” to any self-respecting, internet user/techie and the reaction will be unanimous scorn and seething hatred. DRM is quite literally a digital cancer. It does more destruction than any of the potential positive outcomes tallied together. And yet with all of the negative criticisms against the useless “tool”, numerous industries stand by it’s usefulness.

Today, however, one of the most staunch supporters of a special breed of DRM, “Always-on” DRM, has finally made good on their promise to kill off support for it and never use it again.

In a recent interview, Ubisoft’s Worldwide Director for Online Games, Stephanie Perotti stated the following:

We have listened to feedback, and since June last year our policy for all of PC games is that we only require a one-time activation when you first install the game, and from then you are free to play the game offline.

Yes. Ubisoft made this realization last year. But it is just today that they are finally making good on that promise.

Also worth pointing out is that Perotti (and Ubisoft) stop short of calling DRM a mistake, we all know that is what they are really saying in their heads.
+1 internets for everyone today.
