Google is slowly monetizing its Youtube platform. In the latest step, it is contemplating offering Pay Per View (PPV) option to viewers. In an apparent step to fight the rampant piracy, YouTube could soon feature premiere movies which are currently available via many DTH operators. Though Google has not confirmed yet, this monetization drive could include certain videos too. Google had acquired Youtube for a staggering sum of US$ 1.65 Billion. However, till recently all the videos presented on the streaming web-portal were free to watch. In fact, specially for India, Youtube has a dedicated section for movies called ‘YouTube Box Office’ which streams full-length feature films for free.
Youtube took a very important strategic decision to feature ‘channels’ of large content producers & even managed to premiere a few films on its site. Thanks to these extensive tie-ups with content providers Youtube is slowly shedding its image of a site which contains videos generated by amateurs only. This was such a big issue, that sites Yahoo capitalized on the same & launched their own video-streaming sub-portal which only featured professionally produced content. While Yahoo chose to monetize its video-platform by inserting advertisements, Youtube has copied the step only recently.
Advertisements are a great source of income. However, since they are considered intrusive in nature, people can lose interest in the content. Realizing this sites like BigFlix have come up with online video-rental services. Additionally, all such sites including Youtube have realized the potential of regional content & TV serials too along with movies. Perhaps this PPV endeavor is mere extension which aims to offer people advertising-free content for a subscription fee.
While all this sounds good in theory, there’s still a major hurdle to overcome. Online streaming requires high-speed & cheap broadband. As we all know the poor condition of India’s internet, such streaming services have to regularly deploy some clever tactics to ensure uninterrupted sessions. But, the scenario is changing slowly. Additionally, the mobile internet sphere is witnessing rapid strides in technology that will allow such streaming services to work flawlessly. Though companies & viewers may soon be able to watch premium content, will they pay to access the same?
