The Government of India (GoI) has made a formal appeal to the European Union (EU) to declare the nation as a ‘Data Secure Country’. In an apparent attempt to boost the chances of Indian technology companies seeking projects from EU nations, the Indian Government raised the issue during the meeting of Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma and European Commissioner for Taxation and Customs Union, Audit and Anti-Fraud Algirdas Semeta.
For any Indian company to qualify to work for firms working within the EU jurisdiction, they have to comply with the strict norms, rules & regulations. So far no company, despite its size, has escaped from the clutches of the EU regulators. Hence, the GoI doesn’t want to take any chances & as Phase –1 of promoting cross border trade, India has requested that it be bestowed with the status of having high levels of data security.
While it is good to see the Indian Government appealing for the common benefit of the Indian tech companies, given the present scenario it seems to be a tall order to comply with. As far data & technological superiority goes, India still has a long way to go. With poorly designed IT infrastructure & low standards of Internet, Indian Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are sitting ducks for cyber-attackers. A recent study by Norton even confirmed how Indians lack the basic idea of password security, which is the fist line of defense.
Despite the scenario, many of the IT companies have improved their standing quite a bit. With diligence, these companies are now getting grand invitations from other European nations & countries as well, while a few months earlier United Kingdom itself had expressed its willingness to pump money into India’s IT infrastructure. This request comes at a very crucial stage as India & EU have been locked in a long-winding discussion about Bilateral Investment and Protection Agreement (BITA) for the past 5 years. If this first stage is cleared, chances of mutual investments in both the countries could enhance by a great deal. Indian tech companies could then invest in projects in EU & vice versa.
It is indeed a necessity to achieve the status of a data secure country, but at the same time it is absolutely must to follow data safety protocols within the organization. What do you think?
