(Before It's News)

rly last week it was revealed that Gmail (and other Google services) became inaccessible within Iran’s borders. At the time, it was believed that the takedowns coincided with a nearing launch of the country’s own, internal internet network completely cut off from the outside world. Google services in particular have never been on the Iranian government’s “good” list.

But a new statement from the country’s telecommunications ministry paints a slightly different story. Gmail’s takedown in particular was a mistake. According to ministry member Mohammad Reza Miri, “they don’t have the technical know-how to differentiate between these two services”.

YouTube has been mostly unavailable within the country since 2009. And as the Iranian government explores the world of enhanced security and blocking of sites, more “accidents” such as this are likely to happen.
