Is there life in our solar system beyond Earth? While this answer did not seem very likely a few decades ago, more and more scientists are coming around to the idea that there may be several locations beyond Earth that could harbor life right here in our own galactic neighborhood. Where did this change in thinking come from? There are two main avenues of research that have led to this transformation. The first is the discovery of past liquid water on Mars (possibly still liquid underground) and evidence of liquid oceans on several moons of both Jupiter and Saturn. The other piece of evidence found is with the discovery of bacteria labeled as extremophiles in some of the harshest places on Earth. Places such as volcanic vents deep in the ocean where no light ever penetrates, scorching deserts where little or no rain ever falls and underneath ice in the high Arctic are locations where scientists have found life.
