My Portable World has reported the existence of an Android app which can report mobile spammers to the TRAI very easily. The app is called India Against Spam and is currently live on Google Play. It can be downloaded for free. The app is compatible with all Android phones which have OS version 2.1 and above.
Reporting spam or Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) to the TRAI has been around since some time now but the process is hardly user friendly. If you wish to report, you have to send an SMS to 1909 with this in the text field of your message.
COMP TEL NO XXXXXXXXXX;dd/mm/yy;Time in hh:mm; short description of Unsolicited Message
Memorising this message and keeping this handy every time you receive an irritating spam message is just too much work. India Against Spam has automated this process and let you report a spam message or call using just two clicks. Sending an SMS to TRAI doesn’t cost money as it a toll free service.
Here are some screenshots of the app.
The app is lightweight and easy to operate. The app is designed to do one core thing – report spammers and it does it damn well. Since the TRAI only accepts complaints about Spam within 3 days of you receiving it, the app only shows you only those messages and calls which fit into this criteria. You can also register for DND using this app. The app’s developer Deepak J says that some complaints may generate an error message. This is because every operator uses a different format for spam reporting even though the TRAI has specified a universal format. If you are getting errors you are advised to contact the developer and mail him the error message, so that he can fix it in future updates.
Although there are other spam blockers around, this app is much better because the actions taken by this app are permanent. Once you report a number, the people behind the spam will be warned by the TRAI and in almost all probability will never be allowed to send you a message again. If everyone gets onto it, then telemarketing spam will be reduced greatly.
This app is a perfect example of how one app can shake the system. In order for this effort to succeed, I request all of you to share this app or news about it to all your friends and contacts. Much thanks to Deepak for developing it!
