Apple is no stranger to lawsuits. They’ve been part of at least a few for years. Most recently, Samsung has been the thorn in Apple’s side globally. But they’ve had minor successes (and some failures) along the way. But it is the Mexican market that could be Apple’s most serious blow yet.

As it stands currently, a Mexican telecommunications company with the name “iFone” whom was awarded the trademark on said name back in 2003. Apple filed in 2007 and then sued iFone in Mexico for having a name too close to “iPhone” in 2009. It doesn’t take a genius to see where this is going (or how it will end up) – a loss for Apple.

Mexican newspaper “El Universal” is reporting that Apple has officially lost an injunction bid that would have allowed them to continue selling the iPhone in Mexico under the “iPhone” name. Where it gets worse (for Apple) is that iFone has since counter-sued Apple and demanded 40% of all sales from iPhones in Mexico.

For now we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out. But Apple, being a stickler for a unified branding, would almost certainly pay just about anything to keep the iPhone as “iPhone” in Mexico.

Just goes to show you, these ridiculous lawsuits that tech companies keep waging on each other rarely even out in terms of bad/good, and in many cases (such as this) backfire on the original complaining company.
