Samsung is going where few have ventured as of yet – smart cameras. While the case can be made that point-and-shoot cameras are pretty much a dying breed thanks to increasingly powerful photo censors embedded in smartphones, the lack of any legitimate optical zooming (replaced with crappy digital zoom in most smartphone cameras) means there is a niche Samsung is aiming for. By taking the better-than-smartphone optics in a point-and-shoot and shoving a smartphone OS onto a camera, Samsung is looking to bring you the best of both worlds – fantastic photos and social/sharing capabilities not found on normal cameras.
And today, U.S. residents finally have a carrier to look at for support with AT&T announcing a November 16th launch date. Pricing will be straight forward: $499 (with or without a contract).
For those who have forgotten, the Galaxy Camera is a lot more potent in the photography world thanks to its 16-megapixel w/ 21x optical zoom, pop-up Xenon flash and wide-angle 23mm lens. Other perks that transform this from mere point-and-shoot to “smart camera” status include a quad-core Exynos processor @1.4 GHz, 1 GB of RAM w/ 8 GB of built-in storage with support for up to 32 GB more via removable microSD card, 21 Mbps HSPA+ support, and most importantly, a vivid 4.8-inch 720p LCD display. Unfortunately, the AT&T Galaxy Camera will be HSPA+ only as it doesn’t feature any hardware for said carrier’s LTE network. Still, for most tasks the Wi-Fi/HSPA+ combo will be more than enough.
Sweetening the pot for U.S. AT&T customers, the carrier is currently running a deal where the purchase of any Samsung smartphone will result in a $100 being taken off the purchase of a second device purchased -the Galaxy Camera is included.
Any takers?
