Audi introducing 4 new TDI clean diesel models for U.S.

Audi will be bringing their award-winning 3.0-liter TDI clean diesel engine to four new models in 2014 and updating the Q7 TDI as well. Debuting at the LA Auto Show, the new lineup of diesel vehicles for the U.S. market will include the Audi A8, A7, A6, and Audi Q5.

This will mark the first time that Audi has featured a full lineup of TDI vehicles in North America. Each vehicle will have up to 30% better fuel economy and 30% lower carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions than its gasoline counterpart. These are coupled with new weight reduction technologies including the AFS frame the company has developed.

As the cars introduce, and throughout the show, Audi will be broadcasting and conversing with the world via social media using the Twitter hashtag #FuelForThought. This will be a centerpiece of their LA Show booth.

The Audi A8 is the flagship of the Audi lineup and the new A8 TDI will have an estimated 24/36 MPG city/highway (no EPA rating available yet). For a large, luxury executive sedan, that will make the 2014 A8 one of the most fuel efficient in its segment, while producing 240 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque with a powerful 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds.

The A7 and A6 models will see huge economy improvements with TDI as well. The company’s best-seller in the U.S., though, is the Q5 crossover, which with the new 3.0L TDI will achieve that same 240 hp / 406 lb-ft and with fuel efficiency that will rival the hybrid Q5. The full-sized Audi Q7 TDI will see an upgrade to the latest-generation diesel, adding a 10% efficiency improvement over gasoline before any other technology improvements are added. The new Q7 TDI will have an EPA estimated 19/28 city/highway MPG and a range of 700 miles per 26.4 gallon tank.

These 2014 Audi models become available on the U.S. market beginning in Spring 2013 for the A8 and then Fall 2013 for the A7, A6, and Q5. The new TDI is available now in the Q7 starting at $52,000.
