Gamification Might Be The Emerging New Trend In Indian Recruiting

(Before It's News)

Modern employers are willing to experiment with dynamic new concepts to make recruitment effective, interactive and fun. This is what a study by TimesJobs.com has found. The study by TJInsite asserts that nearly 25% of Indian employers are already using the emerging concept of gamification for recruiting purposes. We wrote about how L’oreal India is using it recruit employees by letting prospective employees play an online game called Reveal.

Gamification is a new concept which deals with making everyday, normal things (which one would not associate with games) into highly interactive and fun experiences. The concept has been applied successfully to things like location apps, a prime example of gamification being Foursquare. New apps which have achievement unlocks, experience points and so on and so forth are an excellent example of gamification. It has been seen globally that gamification brings in more engagement for brands and service. The application of the concept to recruiting is a bold move and according to the report, quite a few companies are dipping their toes in the water.

Madu Ratnayake, a Vice President at Virtusa, speaks about the trend.

“You get to real ‘crowdsourced’ recruitment when you effectively engage your entire employee base as brand ambassadors and lead generators in the recruitment effort. Gamification is a powerful tool to create that excitement and tap into the competitive spirit of your employees to make every single one of them an ‘active talent scout’. Hiring contests, leaderboards and badges are the building blocks of a social gamified recruitment process.”

The study found out that nearly 60% of their surveyed employers already use gamification to engage their employees. 43% of the employers were positive that the concept helps generate better stories and experience among employees, effectively making each employee a brand ambassador. Another 27% of the survey group say that the gaming aspect words well with short-term goals and help employees to see bigger pictures and targets in a better way.

Here are some pertinent findings from the study.

• Nearly 22% surveyed employers are yet to use gamification as their hiring strategy

• About 5% of the surveyed organisations use gamification for their health and wellness programs for their employees

• Nearly 20% surveyed employers believe gamification provides well defined tasks and rules

• Nearly 15% surveyed employers believe gamification promotes social collaboration

• About 14% organisations believe gamification can lead to unanticipated consequences

• Only 8% of the surveyed employers use gamification for hiring at senior levels

There are two sides to the coin of Gamification in the minds of Indian employers though. Here is a graphic which sums it up.

However, I am sure that the surveyed companies are still early adopters of this concept and it might be still some time till the use of the concept becomes a thing in professional recruiting. Many companies are still looking at how they can benefit from it before putting it in practise. The concept has gained ground globally and might be the next trend in the Indian recruiting scene.

What are your thoughts on Gamification? Do you think most Indian companies will take it up? Share your views with us in the comments.
