Our interaction with smartphones is all set to get more fine-tuned. Along with your regular finger-touch, smartphones will soon to able to not just completely accept knuckle and fingernail touch but distinguish between the three. So, while a finger touch will help open an application, a knuckle touch can function like a right-click and result in the opening of a context menu.
Chris Harrison, a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, took a Samsung Galaxy SIII and modified its software so that the phone could accept and distinguish between all three forms of touch. The phone was fitted with a small vibration sensor which picked up the different acoustic and vibration differences between the three types of touches.
Talking on his innovation, FingerSense, Chris said, “A big problem with touchscreens right now is that they are very simplistic, relative to the capability of our hands. We could do so much more.” And now thanks to him, we surely can! Harrison has already registered his company, Qeexo, and is in talks with phone manufacturers to sell his technology.

I think innovations in touch-technology are long overdue. The fact that devices will now be able to differentiate between touch and enhance our user experience is surely exciting. It is almost like artificial intelligence is breaking out of its shell and taking on a life of its own. Wouldn’t you agree?
