Motorola Mobility, has officially announced the closure of services on its website. Famously acquired for US$ 12.5 Billion by tech giant Google last year, the company’s website announcement reads, “We are streamlining our business and support systems, and unfortunately, we’ll no longer have a dedicated website for India. Your local support site will remain open well into the future, and we’ll continue to provide support for our existing products.”
What does this mean? Formerly known as Personal Communication Section (PCS), the Motorola’s networks division was acquired by Google to get a strong head-start in the mobile world. Apart from making great innovations in the personal & enterprise communications division, Motorola had amassed a significantly large patent portfolio. Whoever controlled such a huge copyright treasure could breathe a little easy. We all know how many patent fights are currently wreaking havoc & increasing costs for tech companies.
Though this is the first official manifestation of the company’s exit, the signs were there for all to see. In fact we had covered the same in the month of August, this year. Motorola, at that time, had confirmed that henceforth it won’t introduce any new smartphone models within the country. During that phase itself, the company was on a massive global restructuring drive & US was supposed to be the country with the biggest down-sizing. It had even put up its massive R&D facility in Bangalore up for sale.
India is a great & developing market for all technologically oriented products, from personal communication to enterprise interface, all sorts of products & services have a huge playing field. While it may appear unfortunate that such a huge company with illustrious past in India has to wind up operations Google might have even grander plans for it.
Do you think its right to terminate an established brand to consolidate operations? Couldn’t Google have kept the Motorola name alive?
