Navy SEALs Divulge Classified Information To Develop A Video Game

According to the Web site for Electronic Arts’ “Medal of Honor: Warfighter,” the video game is “The only game that gives players the ability to be in real world events.”
“This personal story was written by actual Tier 1 Operators while deployed overseas. In it, players step into the boots of these warfighters and apply unique skill sets to track down a real global threat, in real international locations, sponsored by real enemies.”
Now, it appears as if the U.S. Navy is none too pleased with the soldiers who participated in the development of this game, punishing 7 soldiers who are a part of SEAL Team 6, the same group responsible for the killing of Osama bin Laden.
According to a spokesperson for the Pentagon, each of these soldiers are still on active-duty and will now receive letters of reprimand and half their salary for the next two months as their punishment.
According to an unnamed Navy official, these soldiers disclosed “tactics and procedures” when they spoke with the makers of Medal of Honor this summer after killing bin Laden. There are 4 other active-duty SEALs who have since left the team but are still under investigation. These 7 soldiers were punished on Wednesday, November 7th, for divulging classified material and the misuse of command gear, according to the Washington Post.
“We do not tolerate deviations from the policies that govern who we are and what we do as sailors in the United States Navy,” said Rear Admiral Garry Bonelli, deputy commander of Naval Special Warfare Command, in a statement.
“The non-judicial punishment decisions made today send a clear message throughout our force that we are and will be held to a high standard of accountability.”
After the famous raid which led to the killing of Osama bin Laden, the Navy SEALs have found themselves in the spotlight more than once. SEALs often pride themselves on staying out of such a spotlight, performing their duties quietly and with honor.
Matt Bissonnette has recently published a book about the SEALs involvement in the killing of bin Laden and spoke with SEALs as a source of information. According to the Pentagon’s chief spokesperson, one former SEAL who was a part of that raid was found to have divulged classified information to Bissonnette. Although the author takes care in his book to point out that he’s taken steps to make sure he wasn’t releasing any classified information, the Pentagon has taken issue with the book, saying Bissonnette violated a nondisclosure agreement. The Pentagon also claims Bissonnette didn’t submit a copy for review before the book was published.
CBS also points out that some members of the SEAL Team 6 will be featured in two upcoming movies: One film is about the rescue of a captain from Somali pirates, the second about the raid on Osama bin Laden.
“Yes, there are SEALs, I think eight of them, active duty Navy SEALs, that are in it,” confirmed Adm. William McRaven, the commander of the raid.
“It started as a recruiting film.”
