Blogger: Be more twitter friendly [Greg Laden's Blog]
Dear Blogger,
You should have a “tweet this” button on each blog post. It should open a window with the title of your post and a shortened URL to it. Extra stuff on there is OK but not necessary.
Here is what the button with the bird on it (indicating twitter) should NOT do:
1) It should not not exist. It should be there on the post, at the top or bottom or both.
2) It should not bring the reader to your twitter page. Put a link on your blog to your twitter page (so people can follow you) if you want, but don’t put it anywhere where it might be confused with a “tweet this her blog post with no strings attached” button.
3) There should be no strings attached. A person who is already signed into twitter who clicks on the button should get nothing more than a small window as described in the preamble to this missive. It should not be required to sign into something or join something.
4) There should be no post-event shenanigans. Once the tweet is sent, that should be the end of it.
5) The tweet this window that pops up should not be blank. You should put, as suggested above, the title of the post and the URL in there. The idea is a two-click process. Tweet button followed by an “OK” button, with the option of backing out or editing in between.
With very few exceptions, I don’t tweet posts that don’t follow these rules because I’m busy tweeting other people’s stuff.
I know not all blogs can do this. I, for instance, have no control over what National Geographic Science Blogs sets up for me to use. At another place I blog, they have had security issues with the tweet button and probably need to upgrade the WordPress platform, but that is more difficult than it sounds. And so on. But the more like the above you can manage, the more likely everyone will tweet your stuff.
If you are a blog reader and you feel this way, pass this on to the bloggers who are doing it wrong.
