Chinese phone manufacturer, Huawei, is looking to build its presence in Europe. According to Reuters, over the next few years Huawei will be doubling their staff in Europe and setting up a new research center in Finland for new phone development. By Huawei’s estimates, it hopes to employ over 14,000 employees in the next 3 to 5 years in total compared to their current count of around 7,000.
In monetary terms, Huawei’s hoping to infuse roughly $91 million USD (~70 million Euros) into the European economy as part of the new research center.
Earlier this year, Huawei was prevented from setting up shop in the U.S. due to “security concerns”. Similarly, Australia has also put the stop to any Huawei infrastructure projects such as their quest for a national high-speed broadband network over similar concerns.
HTC came from rags to riches and saw success begin with Windows Mobile which then exploded with Android. With HTC cooling off and only two real phone manufacturers (Apple and Samsung) running the show at the moment, the moment is ripe for someone else to come along like HTC once did. Huawei certainly has some opportunities to be just that – the next big phone manufacturer to upset the status quo.
