One of the biggest complaints levied against Facebook’s old iPhone app was that it was slow. Facebook’s reliance on HTML web views was notable in trying to further along platform independent products. But several years after the fact, the app still sucked. The big re-write that used native iOS code and launched this past summer was a huge upgrade. Everything was far faster, smoother and just better.
Android users, meanwhile, have had to make do with the same HTML 5 web view version and simply look over their shoulder at their iOS friends in jealousy. Over the last few months images originating from inside Facebook depicting signs urging app developers to switch from iPhones to Android devices showed how much determination Facebook had too. And today, finally, the wait is over.
Later today the official, native Facebook for Android update will hit the Play Store bringing with it the same performance improvements. Visually it’ll look nearly identical to what is currently available, though according to Facebook, will be noticeably faster and smoother. On top of simply being faster, Facebook says that some other tweaks pertaining to “garbage collection” as well as a new, custom scrolling engine were integrated.
Keep checking the Play Store for the update and let us know how you like it (or not) after it drops!
