Electronic Arts’ own digital game distribution service Origin and its users have all become the latest victims to hacking. Apparently, hacker/s broke into the Origin database and changed user account information. What’s worse is that users are being prevented from logging in to their accounts, but not by the hackers. They are being cock blocked by none other than EA and its ridiculous security measures.
In accordance with EA’s protocol, users must provide EA with valid account information in order to regain access to their accounts. Here’s the kicker: that information has been changed by the hacker/s, making it practically impossible for both EA and the consumer trying to work together to resolve the situation.
Neogaf posted a list of threads from EA forums with complaints that reveal the types of information the hacker/s changed. These include users’ date of birth, proof of residence, game activation codes and even security questions, and they vary between user accounts.
One user shared his experience with VG247. According to his story, he called EA’s representatives only to be greeted with an answering bot asking for his personal information. Despite giving the bot all the information, he couldn’t regain access due to the fact that his date of birth was no longer accepted.
However, one user had a different outcome. He was able to regain access to his account after a four day standoff with EA support staff. NeoGaf posted an entire thread about it here.
Ironically, it seems that hackers aren’t the only threat to game account. The companies themselves can pose an even greater threat with their own flawed security policies. EA will just have to provide a better security solution; one that doesn’t inadvertently compromise the safety of its own consumers
