‘Tis a sad day for gamers everywhere. The once great, iconic PlayStation 2 is finally getting put out to pasture 13 years after it first hit the hands of avid gamers everywhere, according to Famitsu. Japanese retailers will no longer receive new PS2 units from Sony, meaning once the stock is dried up, expect prices on eBay and other similar outlets to skyrocket as love for the living room staple is in no short supply.
In those 13 years since the March 4, 2000 – Remember what you were doing then? – Sony has managed to move over 22 million at home and 150+ million abroad. In the world of consumer electronics, 13 years is an eternity. Just look at what your phone looked like 13 years ago. While the console gaming market admittedly moves at a slower pace, 13 years is still nothing to sneeze at.
It has been a long time coming. And we all know nothing lasts forever and that the PS2′s days were numbered. Still, it’s sad to see it go. Let’s all celebrate by dragging our PS2s out of the closet. We’ll fire up Gran Turismo 3 and Grand Theft Auto III. You?
