It’s hard to dismiss Apple’s iPad as a “bad” device. There may be differences in taste which cause a person to choose another tablet over the iPad, but all in all, it cannot be dismissed as a poorly performing or poorly designed device.

Many iPad owners will tell you that one of the last things they noticed about the iPad was its stellar battery life. Apple proudly claims their latest 4th gen and iPad mini can get up to 10 hours of “surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music.” Ten hours also just happens to be plenty of time to take note of all the other great features the iPad and iOS have to offer, which means by the time the battery dips down to 20%, iPad owners already have plenty of reasons to love their tablet.

On Tuesday, British review site Which.co.uk posted the results of their tablet tests, showing that, as far as the battery is concerned, the iPad easily beats its main competitors.

With the screen set to 200 nits (a number Which claims is a reasonable level for indoor daytime use) and surfing via Wi-Fi, Apple’s latest 4th generation iPad lasted an average of 811 minutes, or 13 hours and 31 minutes. This means when surfing the web over Wi-Fi, the iPad lasted 3 hours and 31 minutes longer than Apple claims it will. The nearly 2-year old iPad 2 came in second place amongst 6 of Apple’s largest competitors, running for 590 minutes solid. Sony’s Xperia Tablet 5 scored third place, but ran 4 hours and 37 minutes (277 minutes) less than Apple’s newest iPad. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 ran for an average of 532 minutes on a charge, with Microsoft’s Surface RT and Google’s Nexus 10 falling just behind at 501 and 488 minutes respectively.

According to Which, the average battery life for each of the 16 tablets they tested was around 7 and a half hours, or 451 minutes, 6 hours less than Apple’s iPad.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime was only capable of running a measly 335 minutes on a single charge. As Which points out, the accompanying keyboard dock has an additional battery built-in, and when used with this dock the Transformer Prime lasted much longer, nearing 11 hours.

However, this dock also makes the Prime nearly double the weight of all the other tablets.

Apple’s brand new iPad mini also handily bested the competition in terms of battery life, scoring the highest marks above other 7-inch competitors such as Amazon’s Fire HD, the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

Just like its larger sibling, the iPad mini’s battery lasted even longer than Apple claims, surfing the web over Wi-Fi for 13 hours and 3 minutes. The second place contender in this list, the Amazon Fire HD, ran for 3 hours less than the iPad mini, lasting 591 minutes before giving up the ghost. According to Which’s reviews, the average 7-inch tablet lasted for just under 8 hours before calling it quits, and once again, Apple’s iPad mini stood out by beating this average by nearly 5 additional hours.

The older Amazon Kindle Fire and newer Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 both scored the lowest in the 7-inch battery scale, lasting for only 437 and 425 minutes respectively.

This isn’t the first time Apple’s iPad mini has been put up against the Amazon Fire HD and Google Nexus 7, of course. While the battery on the mini may last longer than these 2 competitors, (the Nexus 7 lasted for an average of 9 hours and 10 minutes) some reviewers have claimed the displays on the Fire HD and Nexus 7 are brighter and more crisp than Apple’s iPad mini.
