It turns out that Clove isn’t the only one to celebrate 20 years in the tech industry at the moment – the text message has just said goodbye to its teenage years as well.
The first text message was first sent on December 3rd, 1992 by Neil Papworth. Keeping in the festive spirit, Papworth wrote “Merry Christmas”. Many, many more have been sent since then, with a few smileys included along the way.
As part of the 20th birthday celebration, phone watchdog Ofcom has released some texting stats. The average Briton sends 50 a week, while more than 150 billion text messages were sent in Britain last year. This number is likely to start declining soon though, with internet messaging services such as Whatsapp offering the functionality of the text message, but without the need for it to be included in a monthly tariff/costing.
Text messaging has now made communication on the go so simple, that it’s easy to wonder how people ever got by without it.
