In a special NBC interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook airing tonight (9pm CST/10pm EST), Tim Cook will officially announce plans to begin manufacturing at least one Mac line in the U.S. beginning in 2013. The change will be monumental for an industry which traditionally outsources most, if not all work to foreign countries.
The move back to the U.S. should also help improve Apple’s brand image which has taken a hit over the last couple of years as profits and success explodes as well as after a rash of worker suicides at one of Apple’s manufacturing plants in China.
When asked why Apple won’t push ahead faster with U.S. based manufacturing, Cook states in his interview that the reason for the slow start isn’t want everyone assumes – money. Instead, Cook says the U.S. education system is failing and that the skills needed for Apple’s demands in regards to modern manufacturing processes are simply better served overseas.
The announcement comes after recent reports showing the new late-2012 iMacs sporting “Manufactured in the U.S.A.” instead of the usual “China”. That said, it would make sense for Apple to begin with something lower volume, say their high-end Mac Pro line. Thoughts?
