1. Robert E. Lee believed slavery to be a “moral & political evil.”

In an 1856 letter to his wife, the future Confederate general wrote:

“In this enlightened age, there are few I believe, but what will acknowledge, that slavery as an institution, is a moral & political evil in any Country.”

Howeer, the letter goes on to discuss a significantly less than enlightened view that black people are “immeasurably better off here than in Africa,” and that the pain of slavery is “necessary for their instruction as a race.”

So there’s that.
