Letting your kids spend hours in front of the screen isn’t as harmful as we have always thought. A new study has revealed that letting your kids play video games is apparently better than allowing them to watch television.
Researchers at Queensland University, Game Research and Interaction Design Lab examined the impact of games and television on children between the ages of 2 – 5. They separated media into two categories: active and passive. The active category included media that stimulated their mind or body. And it turned out that games motivate the kids mentally and physically more as compared to a television. Hence, the study suggests games to be a better option, than the latter.
Some games ask for a little physical activity, while others demand greater interaction. Researchers are of the opinion that games can provoke kids for physical activities, and push them to exercise their cognitive skills. “Such games can improve academic performance, social skills and self-esteem”, says Dr. Penny Sweetser, person involved with the study.
However, Angry Birds is still not able enough to spend hours with your young ones. Dr. Sweetser suggests parents to engage with their children to enhance their cognitive skills, reported The Border Mail. While you’re off to cooking or busy somewhere else, you may let your kids play games to distract them from television.
